Northern California Accounting Schools

From San Francisco's financial district to Silicon Valley, Northern California is one of the economic and financial centers of the country and provides many career opportunities for accountants. Many Northern California colleges and universities offer undergraduate degree programs in accounting that prepare students for rigorous state certification exams while providing them with the knowledge and training they will need to succeed.
  1. Santa Clara University

    • Founded in 1851, Santa Clara University is the oldest higher learning institution in the Western United States and has been offering accounting since 1923. SCU's accounting department offers two undergraduate majors: accounting and accounting and information systems. Both major programs prepare students for professional examinations necessary to become either a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Management Accountant (CMA). Students must fulfill the core curriculum requirements of both the university and the College of Business. SCU students also have the chance to study abroad for a semester in their junior year and still graduate in four years.

    University of San Francisco

    • Founded in 1855, the University of San Francisco is a Jesuit college and the oldest university in San Francisco. USF's undergraduate major program in accounting prepares students for careers in government or the private sector. The program gives students a foundation in accounting principles, theory, practice and financial reporting before allowing them to specialize in an area of interest through senior-year electives. The university also provides computer-based self-study programs to prepare students for the CPA exam.

    Saint Mary's College of California

    • Founded in 1863, Saint Mary's College of California is a Catholic, Lasallian liberal art college in Moraga, 20 miles east of San Francisco. The accounting undergraduate major program meets new California state requirements for CPA licensing and prepares students for jobs with private firms, nonprofit organizations and government agencies. According to Virginia Smith, the Department of Accounting Chair, almost all seniors in the programs receive job offers before they graduate. In addition to in-depth instruction in the principles and theory of accounting and computer training, students also take seminars on current issues, tax law and auditing standards. Saint Mary's also has an accounting club which offers networking opportunities with visits to firms and on-campus events.

    San Jose State University

    • Founded in 1857, San Jose State University is California's oldest public higher learning institution. SJSU offers a Bachelor of Science degree program in business administration with a concentration in accounting. Students are prepared for employment in both the private and public sector. The curriculum includes the conceptual framework of how economic data is measured and expressed, technical competency in measuring and communicating data, and accounting ethics.
