University of California, Davis is a public, four-year research institution in northern California. The university has more than 100 undergraduate programs of study, and almost 90 graduate-level programs. Students in health-related study programs can partake in a sports medicine internship, held at the university's Sacramento 10,000-square-foot facility. The internship lasts a minimum of six months, and affords practical experience in chronic sports injury assessment, fitness assessment and sports physicals. Students must commit to at least eight hours per week and be CPR-certified.

Located in southern California, Pepperdine University is a private Christian institution. The university's main campus is in Malibu, but there are also five graduate studies campuses across Los Angeles and Orange County. Students interested in sports medicine can pursue a bachelor's degree in the field, or achieve a bachelor's degree in a related field and complete the sports medicine minor. The Bachelor of Science degree in sports medicine requires 57 units, including courses in biostatistics, neuroscience and motor control and exercise in health and disease. The 40-unit Bachelor of Arts in sports medicine features study in the areas of sports nutrition, human anatomy and venture initiation.

California State University, Long Beach is a public four-year university in the Los Angeles area. The university offers a Master of Science program in sports medicine and sports injury studies through its Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education. All students must take nine units of core study, including classes in research methods and computer applications in kinesiology and physical education. Additional curriculum includes health-related programs in sports, advanced exercise physiology and sports psychology. Applicants to the program must complete at least 24 units of physical education coursework as a part of a bachelor's degree.
