Schools With an Undergraduate Degree in Sports Medicine

Whether you enjoy watching sports on television, volunteering and rooting for your local team or are planning to start a career in the sports field, consider enrolling in an undergraduate program in sports medicine. Sports medicine professionals treat athletes' injuries, monitor nutrition and consult on exercise regimens. While earning a bachelor's degree in sports medicine, you'll have the opportunity for clinical hands-on experience through your college's sports teams and through internships.
  1. Pepperdine University

    • Earning a bachelor's degree in sports medicine from Pepperdine University involves topics such as sports nutrition, psychology of exercise, human anatomy, neuromuscular adaptations to training, exercise in health and disease, musculoskeletal anatomy and kinesiology, physiology of exercise and foundations of health and fitness. Students complete general courses in biology, physical education, math and communications as well. Pepperdine offers an honors research program for sports medicine students in the first semester of their junior year. Internships are available at local hospitals, fitness centers, physical therapy offices and rehabilitation clinics. Candidates must have a high school diploma and two recommendations (personal and academic), plus SAT or ACT scores. Pepperdine is affiliated with the Church of Christ, but no religious affiliation is required for admission.

    Marietta College

    • Marietta College's Department of Sports Medicine offers a bachelor's degree program in athletic training. Courses include medical terminology, fundamentals of athletic training, sports medicine, medical aspects of sports medicine, therapeutic rehabilitation, applied nutrition, head and spine assessment, therapeutic modalities and pathophysiology. Students gain real-world experience through clinical training at sites such as Marietta Memorial Hospital, outpatient physical therapy clinics and Marietta College's sports facilities. Students first apply to Marietta College's general studies program, which requires a high school diploma. During the fall of their sophomore year, students interested in sports medicine may apply to the Athletic Training Education Program. Applicants must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.75, a minimum of 130 direct observation clinical hours, first aid and CPR certification, a health exam and immunizations and an interview with the athletic training committee.

    Canisius College

    • The Canisius College Department of Sports Medicine, Health and Human Performance offers a bachelor's degree in athletic training with a minor in human performance. Classes in the program include emergency care, introduction to athletic training, therapeutic exercise, sports psychology, health issues for athletic trainers, pathophysiology and pharmacology, kinesiology and human anatomy. Students get hands-on experience working with such Canisius College sports as baseball, softball, lacrosse, cross country, golf and hockey. Standard admissions requirements are a high school diploma or GED, but high school juniors and seniors may take Canisius College classes while still enrolled in high school.
