Schools With Architecture Degrees

According the U.S. Department of Labor, professional architects are required to hold a degree in architecture. Although the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) has accredited 117 schools in the United States, some state architectural licensing requirements do not necessitate graduating from an accredited program. The projected job openings for architects are predicted to grow by 16% by the year 2018. Individuals interested in joining the architecture workforce can find a variety of undergraduate and graduate programs in colleges and universities.
  1. University of California Los Angeles

    • University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) Department of Architecture and Urban Design offers four graduate degrees in architecture and one undergraduate degree in architectural studies. The Master of Architecture I degree is accredited by the NAAB. This three-year program combines design studio, specialized architecture, and elective course work. Graduates will be prepared for architectural licensure. Students may also enroll in the Concurrent Degree program combining Architecture I with Urban Planning. The Masters of Architecture II program is a one-year degree for students who already hold an undergraduate (five-year) architecture diploma. The Masters of Architecture II degree allows architects to gain specialized theoretical and practical experience. The MA/Ph.D. degrees are for students who wish to conduct scholarly research in the field of architecture. Undergraduate students may select the B.A. in Architectural Studies. This program provides students with a basic understanding of architectural principles. It does not lead to professional licensure as an architect.

    • Florida's University of Miami School of Architecture offers both bachelors and masters level programs that are accredited by the NAAB. The Bachelor of Architecture degree is a five-year program that leads to a career as a professional or licensed architect. Undergraduate architecture students must complete three years of basic education and foundational architecture courses. The remaining two years are filled with upper level specialized studio and theory classes. Additionally, students must declare a non-architecture minor in a concentration that is not part of the School of Architecture. Students may opt for a sixth year to complete a combination bachelors-masters degree (B.A.S.E./M.Arch). Other masters level programs include the 3-year and advanced standing tracks. Both programs lead to a Masters in Architecture. The three-year track is designed for students who hold a bachelors in a non-architecture or non-arts field, while the advanced standing track is intended for those with an architecture background.
