College Summer Film Programs

You can learn the basics of making a short film or feature by attending a summer film program through a college. These programs teach students directing, writing and producing, and might provide them the opportunity to act in their own films and in classmates' films. Although college summer film programs often do not have strict entry requirements, you should apply yourself thoroughly to get the most from your program.
  1. American Academy of Dramatic Arts

    • The American Academy of Dramatic Art (AADA) offers summer classes that are ideal for film actors or film directors who want to learn what actors go through on set. The AADA offers courses on auditioning technique and advanced camera acting. Filmmakers might be interested in the "Digital Film Making for the Actor" course in New York. According to the AADA, the professors who teach the two-week intensive summer courses are all professionals in the field. Acceptance to the programs at AADA is usually based on an audition. However, with two-week intensive summer courses, the AADA takes students on a rolling basis.

North Carolina School for the Arts

    • University of North Carolina School for the Arts offers five-week summer sessions in filmmaking. Tuition varies depending on whether the student is high school student or graduate and whether he lives in state or out of state. Applicants must submit two letters of recommendation and an essay about what they want to accomplish in the summer session. The program is for students who are about to become 10th, 11th or 12th graders or freshmen in college.

New York University's Tisch School of the Arts

    • New York University's Tisch School of the Arts offers high school students the chance to study film in New York or Dublin. Students earn six college credits upon completion of the program. The summer program at the New York campus is through the Kanbar Institute of Film and Television, which offers full-time students the opportunity to earn a Bachelor of Fine Art with a concentration in film. Students do not need to have made films prior to signing up for a summer program with NYU.

    University of California--Los Angeles

    • University of California--Los Angeles (UCLA) has one of the country's most respected film programs. Students gain unique skills and techniques that can lead to a new hobby or passion. They make new friends with common interests by living in student housing, and they earn college credit, too.
