Horticulture Programs in Pennsylvania

Horticulture is a specialized science in which college students learn to cultivate seeds, soil, and plants. Graduates with a horticulture degree work on research, development and cultivation on a variety of trees, plants, shrubs, fruits, and vegetables. Horticulture is important for plant cultivation of large-scale production of crops. Genetic engineering, plant physiology, and biochemistry also are studied.

    • Penn State University's bachelor program in horticulture applies the technology and science involved in cultivating crops and how to manage commercial and public enterprises. The program provides students an opportunity choose from a variety of horticulture programs. Students can take floriculture, to learn about greenhouse production and flower retailing. They also can choose between olericulture, or working with vegetable crops, and pomology, or cultivating fruit.

      Students learn about plant nutrition, plant breeding and physiology. Horticulture students can enter the real world with the knowledge and expertise to operate plant-related businesses, develop plants for human nutrition, and improve our environment, by using plants to modify the aesthetics of a business or community location such as a park.

    Temple University

    • Temple University provides a certificate program in the Department of Landscape Architecture and Horticulture. Courses in this program are used to teach horticultural therapy skills. The credit certificate is part of a student's undergraduate study. Students who complete this certificate program must maintain a 3.0 grade-point-average for the horticultural classes they have taken. Fundamentals of Horticulture, Horticulture Therapy, Horticultural Program Management, and Designing with Perennials are some of the courses in the program.

    Pennsylvania School of Technology

    • The Pennsylvania School of Technology offers an associate degree in Ornamental Horticulture, with a focus in Plant Production. This two-year degree provides a foundation for horticultural business, as students learn about production in the greenhouse, the nursery and the field. The faculty discusses the growth of plants, from seed to the finished product. Woody landscaping plants, floriculture and vegetable plants also are studied. Lab instruction focuses on the physiology and growth of plants, plant production tools and production techniques. The program prepares students to as greenhouse, nursery or large-scale garden managers or as landscape designers.
