CNA Programs in Pennsylvania

Health care practitioner and technical and support occupations are a few of the fastest growing occupations in the state of Pennsylvania, according to Education-Portal.com. In particular, certified nursing assistants (CNAs)--who provide hands-on care for long-term-care patients--remain in high demand, according to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics. The median hourly wage for CNAs in May 2008 was $11.46. Several schools in Pennsylvania prepare students for this high-demand field.

    • Delaware County Community College Allied Health and Nursing Department in Media offers a nursing assistant/patient care assistant program that trains students to work in a long-term-care nursing facility. Students learn infection control, basic nursing skills and emergency procedures. Students also learn how to promote residents' independence and rights, maintain a clean environment, care for a patient when death is impending and identify patients' psychosocial needs. The program, which requires a high school diploma or GED, includes 30 lecture hours, 22.5 lab hours and 37.5 hours of clinical training over almost 10 weekends. Students also must complete a criminal background or FBI check, complete medical forms and have current medical insurance. Founded in 1967, Delaware County Community College is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.

    Central Pennsylvania Institute of Science and Technology

    • The Central Pennsylvania Institute of Science and Technology in Pleasant Gap trains students to become CNAs. Students gain 72 hours of classroom instruction and 48 hours of clinical experience. After this, they are eligible to take the nurse assistant certification exam. Classes are available in the daytime and evening. Evening students might have some clinical training on the weekends as well. The program requires that students complete a physical and tuberculosis skin test before starting. Founded in 1969, the Central Pennsylvania Institute of Science and Technology is accredited by the Pennsylvania Department of Education and Pennsylvania State Board of Vocational Education, according to Collegebound.net.

    Schuylkill Technology Center

    • The nurse aide program at Schuylkill Technology Center in Frackville covers a variety of topics such as basic nursing/personal care; safety and emergencies; restorative skills; mental health and social service needs; and communication and interpersonal skills. Students also can choose to specialize in the areas of home health aide work, long-term care or direct care worker/human services work. These programs cover extra topics such as dementia, special diets, medications, mental retardation and confidentiality. The program is 140 hours long. Schuylkill Technology Center is accredited by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
