APA Approved Clinical Psychology Programs

Some states require students---as part of licensing requirements---to hold a degree from a program accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA). Clinical psychology graduate programs train students in the delivery of psychological services and usually involve five to six years of coursework, supervised experience and internship.
  1. Azusa Pacific University

    • Azusa Pacific University, a Christian university located about 26 miles from Los Angeles, offers an APA-accredited clinical graduate program leading to the Doctor of Psychology degree. The program focuses on family psychology and incorporates several other sub-fields, including neuropsychology, social psychology and developmental psychology. Coursework and training integrates Christian faith and values. Students can choose a concentration in either forensic or consulting psychology. The University has a pre-doctorate option for bachelor's degree-holders, which consists of one year of coursework that primes the candidate for doctoral work. The doctorate program requires three years of practicum coursework, as well as an entire year-long internship.

    • University of Miami's APA-accredited Doctor of Philosophy program, in clinical psychology, follows the scientist-practitioner training model, but places more emphasis on clinical science and research. Students get assigned to a faculty "mentor" when entering the program, whose research interests align with the interests of the student. Aside from core coursework, all students take a few courses in psychopathology, human development and professional standards and ethics. Students can choose a specialization area in either adult, child, pediatric or health clinical psychology. All students admitted to the doctoral program receive full funding from graduate assistantships, grants and scholarships.
