Manhattan-Area Community Colleges

There are many community colleges near in New York City. The first and best place to start is the City University of New York website. With 23 total institutions located in all five boroughs of New York City, CUNY's schools offer an abundance of associate, undergraduate, graduate and certificate programs. Of the 23 institutions, six are community colleges located within or just outside Manhattan, and are all accessible via the city's public transportation system.
  1. Borough of Manhattan Community College

    • With campuses located in the heart of downtown Manhattan, just blocks from neighborhoods such as SoHo and the financial district, the Borough of Manhattan Community College embodies the bustling metropolitan area. Its students not only come from New York, but from 155 different countries, reflecting the multiethnic culture of Manhattan. The college awards associate degrees in science, arts and applied science in 27 fields, including traditional fields such as business and education, as well as in programs such as forensic science, entrepreneurship and small business management. The school offers evening classes, distance learning and offsite programs.

    Bronx Community College

    • Bronx Community College celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2007, and offers a more traditional college experience than the typical urban college, with its sprawling 43 acre, tree-lined campus in the middle of the Bronx. BCC offers associate of arts, associate of science and associate of applied sciences degrees in a broad spectrum of fields.

    Hostos Community College

    • The Eugenio María de Hostos Community College, or Hostos College as it is widely known, was established to cater to the diverse and fast-growing ethnic population of the south Bronx, particularly the Hispanic and African-American communities. The school is known for its transitional English classes for ESL students and Spanish/English bilingual classes. The college provides certification and associate degrees.

    Kingsborough Community College

    • Kingsborough Community College serves a diverse student body that numbers 30,000 per year, and consistently ranks among the top community colleges in the nation in associate degrees awarded to minority students. The school is located on a 70-acre campus in Manhattan Beach, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and Sheepshead Bay. KCC offers a wide range of credit and noncredit courses in the liberal arts and career education, as well as a number of specialized credit and noncredit certificates. Other distinctive programs include bilingual studies, the teachers’ sabbatical studies program and the weekend college program.

    LaGuardia Community College

    • LaGuardia Community College is located in Long Island City, a bustling neighborhood that is a 10 minute subway ride from midtown Manhattan. With 13,000 students hailing from approximately 160 countries every year, LaGuardia considers itself the "world's community college." The school offers 31 majors, three certificates and an honors program in business, science and technology, arts, and health and human services. This school is geared towards those who have high academic ambitions--34 percent of the student body goes on to earn bachelor's degrees and 45 percent of those students gain master's degrees.

    Queensborough Community College

    • Queensborough Community College in Bayside, New York, offers transfer and career degree programs in 17 academic disciplines resulting in associate degrees in arts, science and applied science. In 2009, Queensborough introduced the freshman academies for every full-time new student. The six academies are science, technology, engineering and math, liberal arts; visual and performing arts, education; health-related sciences and business.

    Technical Career Institutes

    • The Technical Career Institues' College of Technology was originally known as the Marconi Institute, named after one of the founders, Guglielmo Marconi, the Nobel Prize-winner. After undergoing one more name change in 1919, it finally became TCI College of Technology in 1974. The college serves more than 3,000 students in programs geared towards the technical industry, such as information, computer, automotives and industrial electronics technology. TCI also offers associate degrees in accounting, business and paralegal studies.
