Civil Aviation Colleges

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates the demand for certain occupations in the civil aviation or air transportation industry will increase by more than 15 percent from 2008 through 2018. These occupations include air traffic controllers, commercial pilots and aviation managers. To enter any of these fields, a post-secondary degree is necessary. A number of colleges throughout the United States offer degree programs in civil aviation.
  1. Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University

    • Founded in 1926, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University is a private, nonsectarian institution with branches in Daytona Beach, Florida, and Prescott, Arizona. In 2010, "U.S. News and World Report" gave the college received the 12th-place ranking among all universities in the South that offer master's degree programs. The university specializes in degree programs related to aeronautics and civil aviation. For undergraduate, Embry offers baccalaureate degrees in professional piloting, aerospace electronics, air traffic management and aviation business administration. The college also offers accelerated degree programs that allow students to receive a baccalaureate degree in an aviation-related field and a Master of Business Administration degree in five years. Embry-Riddle also offers traditional master's and doctorate degrees. Internships are available for students in all majors, and students have the opportunity to study abroad in one of 21 countries. Approximately 69 percent of freshmen and 61 percent of continuing students receive financial aid while studying at the university, according to the "2009 Barron's Profiles of American Colleges."

    Pacific Union College

    • The Seventh-Day Adventist Church founded Pacific Union College in 1882 in Angwin, California, a rural area 70 miles from San Francisco. "U.S. News and World Report" ranked the school 11th among all baccalaureate colleges in the western United States in 2010. The college grants both an Associate of Science and a Bachelor of Science degree program in aviation science. The latter program includes coursework in meteorology, aircraft systems, aerodymanics and instrumentation. Graduates from the program receive their private pilot, instrument rating and commercial single and multi-engine pilot licenses. All students must study religion prior to graduation. Internships and study abroad opportunities are available for interested students. Every full-time freshmen and around 99 percent of continuing students benefit from financial aid while studying at Pacific Union College, explains the "2009 Barron's Profiles of American Colleges."

    Daniel Webster College

    • Located in Nashua, New Hampshire, Daniel Webster College is a private, nonsectarian institution with approximately 1,000 undergraduate and graduate students. The college offers an associate degree in aviation operations and baccalaureate degree programs in aviation management and air traffic management. Both bachelor's degree programs feature the opportunity for travel study trips to Washington, D.C., and internships at area airports. Eligible students can receive federal and state financial aid, work study placements and institutional scholarships while studying at Daniel Webster.
