Colorado Aviation Colleges

Orville Wright's 1903 flight of 12 seconds marked the beginning of aviation history. By 2005, an average of 1.8 million people traveled by airplane each day in the United States. And in 2010, Denver International Airport, Colorado's largest airport and one of the world's busiest airport hubs, hosted 52,209,307 passengers. Colorado's thriving aviation industry creates a high demand for aviation educational programs throughout the state.
  1. Metropolitan State College

    • Metropolitan State College of Denver, located in downtown Denver, Colorado, offers a bachelor of science degree with several choices for majors and professional certifications. Concentrations include aviation technology, aviation management, aerospace physics and professional flight officer. Internship programs through the college provide opportunities to gain experience before graduation. The college's central location provides convenient access to flight training at three major and regional airports within 30 miles of the college. As of January 2011, residents paid $191.45 tuition per credit hour, and nonresidents paid $560.60 per credit hour.

    Aims Community College

    • The Greely campus of Aims Community College offers the associate of applied science degree through its aviation department. Four academic options offered to students include general aviation pilot, helicopter pilot, professional pilot, and air traffic controller. The program requires four to five semesters of study. Tuition costs for in-district students ranges from $6,038 to $7,947. Out-of-state cost increases dramatically with tuition ranging from $28,149 to $35,777. Students enrolled in one of the three pilot options incur additional costs for multi-engine rating, instrument rating and certificate fees.

    Colorado Northwestern Community College

    • Rangley Colorado, situated along the White River near the Utah border, hosts Colorado Northwestern Community College. CNCC offers an associates degree and a certificate in aviation technology. The college provides credit for prior learning and opportunities for independent study. The aviation technology program features preparation for aspiring pilots interested in working in the private and commercial sectors. In-state tuition for 2010 ranged from $96.25 to $158.25 per credit hour.

    Redstone College

    • Students enrolled in the aviation program at Denver's Redstone College choose between a concentration in avionics or airframe and powerplant. Tuition costs for each program totaled $35,864 in 2010. Students receive hands-on training and free tutoring when needed. In an effort to ensure students maintain up-to-date training, Redstone alumni enjoy tuition-free retraining.
