LPN and RN Programs in Hampton Roads, Virginia

Hampton Roads is an area in southeastern Virginia that includes the cities of Norfolk, Chesapeake and Hampton. The area is home to a number of private and public colleges, some of which offer programs in nursing that can lead to licensure in the fields of registered or licensed practical nursing. The Virginia Workforce Connections estimates that the demand for registered (RNs) and licensed practical nurses (LPNs) in the state will increase by 23 to 28 percent from through 2018.
  1. Chesapeake Center for Science and Technology

    • Founded in 1967, Chesapeake Center for Science and Technology is the oldest career school in Virginia. The college offers a program in practical nursing. The program lasts for 18 months and is open to high school seniors as well as adults. Among the topics covered in the program are anatomy, nutrition, patient care, drug therapy and medical-surgical nursing. The program culminates in a six-month clinical internship experience, during which students gain exposure working with patients of all ages as well as with expectant mothers in labor and delivery and wards and with patients in psychiatric facilities. The program is free of charge for high school students in the Chesapeake Center's service area. A limited number of institutional scholarships are available for adults, and the school participates in veteran's benefit programs.

    Hampton University

    • Hampton University is a private, nonsecatarian institution with more than 5,400 undergraduate and graduate students. In 2001, U.S. News and World Report rated the university 29th among all schools in the southern United States that offer master's degree programs. The college offers a Bachelor of Science degree program for RNs, which is the oldest, continuously-offered baccalaureate program in the state of Virginia. In addition to the traditional bachelor's program, the school offers accelerated programs for individuals who already have a baccalaureate degree in another field and for LPNs who wish to become RNs. Also offered at the college are online programs for RNs with associate degrees who wish to earn bachelor's or master's degrees. Traditional master's and doctorate degrees in nursing are also available. Approximately 57 percent of all students receive some type of financial aid, according to 2009 Barron's Profiles of American Colleges.

    Tidewater Community College

    • A public, two-year institution, Tidewater Community College opened in 1968 and features campuses throughout the Hampton Roads region. The college offers its nursing programs through its location in Portsmourth. The traditional nursing program for would-be RNs culminates in an Associate of Applied Science degree and requires two years of full-time study to complete. The college also offers an accelerated associate degree program in nursing for individuals with an LPN license. Both programs include clinical training hours in area hospitals and other medical facilities. Eligible students can receive federal and state grants and loans and institutional scholarshios while studying at Tidewater. The school provides job placement assistance for all students.
