Film Production Degree Programs in Toronto

According to Humber College, film and television production creates nearly 127,000 jobs in Canada per year. Toronto has a number of film and television production courses and colleges strictly devoted to this field. Students who pursue film production will generally be able to receive either a bachelor of fine arts or a bachelor of arts depending on the university. Most of these classes will be offered as a sequence under the fine arts umbrella.

    • Humber College offers a Bachelor of Applied Arts in Film and Media Production, and this class is only offered on the school's Lakeshore Campus. This program runs over eight semesters (four years), and students will be required to work in the field during the summer between their third and fourth years. Coursework focuses on screenwriting, narrative creation, and visual construction, and it also offers training in film production for new media like smart phones, hand-held devices, and the Internet. Other coursework includes, editing, audio, post-production, directing, film theory, business law, entertainment law, and cinematography. Students must complete a final project in order to graduate.

    York University

    • This university offers students the opportunity to pursue either a bachelor of arts or a bachelor of fine arts. Coursework includes editing, screenwriting, cinematography, audio, directing, producing, film theory, film critique, and the history of film. Students may also specialize further in cinematography or sound design. If students concentrate in either screenwriting or production, they will receive a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Film Production and Screenwriting. If they concentrate in film history, criticism, or theory, they will receive a Bachelor of Arts in Cinema and Media Studies. The school also offers a film industry lecture series for students who would like to learn about new advancements in the industry.

    Ryerson University

    • This university offers students the opportunity to receive a Bachelor of Arts in Arts and Contemporary Studies, and they may choose Film Studies as a sequence. This sequence focuses on editing, storytelling, sound recording, film production technologies, screenwriting, film theory, and the film business. Students will be required to complete a final project to graduate. For many of these courses, students will be learning in a lab environment.
