San Diego Fashion Design Colleges

The California Employment Development Department predicts that the demand for fashion designers in San Diego County, California will increase by more than 21 percent from 2006 through 2016. Competition for new positions will likely be high, and having post-secondary training in fashion can help prospective designers gain employment. A small number of colleges in the city of San Diego offer programs in fashion design.
  1. Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising

    • The Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising is a private, for-profit college that offers associate and bachelor's degrees through 20 different programs related to fashion. The school has accreditation through the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and the National Association of Schools of Art and Design. Home to more than 7,500 students, the college offers an Associate of Arts degree in fashion design. The program lasts for two year and requires coursework in sewing, draping, patterning, technical sketching, computer-aided drafting, color theory, English composition, costume history, critical thinking and art history. Also offered is an advanced design program for students who already have associate degrees. This course of study includes five additional studio design courses and classes in marketing and business plan writing. Programs are also offered in footwear design, fashion knitwear design and jewelry design. Federal financial aid is available for qualified students.

    Fashion Careers College

    • Approved by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools, San Diego Mesa College is a private, for-profit training school in the Bay Park area of San Diego. The college offers both associate degree and certificate programs in fashion design. The associate degree curriculum requires 18 months of full-time study to complete and features classes in communications, drawing, design mathematics, draping, pattern-making, textile science, computer-aided drafting, line development and fashion sociology. All degree students must present a formal portfolio for review and complete an internship prior to graduation. Eligible students can receive federal loans and grants and institutional scholarships to help offset the cost of tuition. Job placement assistance is available.

    San Diego Mesa College

    • San Diego Mesa College is a public, two-year institution with more than 37,000 full and part-time students. The school has accreditation through the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges, Western Association of Schools and Colleges. Fashion programs at the college include associate degrees and certificates in both fashion design and in computer fashion technology. Both associate programs require classes in apparel construction, textiles and patterning as well as an internship. The fashion design program includes additional design workshops and classes in draping and sketching. The computer fashion technology degree involves classes in Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, two-dimensional design and graphic and multimedia design. Among the financial aid options available for qualified San Diego Mesa students are federal and state grants and loans, work-study, scholarships and private loans.
