San Diego City College was founded in 1914 as San Diego Junior College, and it is known as California's third-ever community college. The college, located between San Diego's downtown area and Balboa Park, offers admission to students with high school diplomas or equivalents as well as high school students seeking dual enrollment. The school is also willing to accept emancipated minors and people without high school diplomas under provisional statuses. San Diego City College offers a variety of areas of study including performing arts, sociology, psychology, plumbing, cosmetology and athletics.

Located in the Kearny Mesa area of Northern San Diego, San Diego Mesa college is the largest of the San Diego Community College District schools. The school's campus features a theater, sports arenas, labs and fine arts buildings in addition to the requisite classrooms and libraries. San Diego Miramar College is located in the Mira Mesa suburbs of San Diego. The college boasts a student body of more than 10,000, as of 2010, who are enrolled in academic programs including math, chemistry, communications and education. Additionally the college has technical certificate programs in areas such as aviation, diesel technology and biotechnology. The school was originally established in 1969 to train law enforcement officers and firefighters, training it continues to do in addition to training EMTs and open-water lifeguards--a program San Diego Miramar College claims is the only one in the world.

Any California resident over 18 may apply, while any resident under 18 needs only a high school diploma. San Diego Continuing Education has six campuses across the city and offers classes in computers, parenting, job training, nutrition, English as a second language, fashion, computers and business. Additionally, the college has classes specifically for students over age 55 in such areas as arts and crafts, music, writing and law.
