San Diego Nursing Colleges

San Diego is just south of Los Angeles. This southern California coastal community has three nursing colleges. They all offer programs in critical care, hospital care, midwifery, forensic and nursing informatics. If you are interested in examining patients and working with the sick, you can study to become either a registered nurse (RN) or a nurse practitioner (NP). There is a difference between a NP and a RN. Both require at least two years of school and an associate's degree and the ability to pass a national licensing exam. To become an NP, you must complete the same programs as an RN, but also obtain a bachelor and master's degree. An RN cannot prescribe medications, but an NP can.
  1. San Diego State University School of Nursing

    • The School of Nursing offers bachelor and master degree programs and has four facilities on campus. Students can get training on medical software and diagnostic equipment in the Media Lab, work on manikins in a hospital setting in the Nursing Fundamentals Skills Lab, become familiar with examination rooms in the Physical Assessment Lab and work in a seven-bed simulated hospital setting at the Sharp Healthcare Human Patient Simulation Center. The faculty includes 60 nursing professionals and several adjunct instructors. The school offers financial aid through scholarships. Applications for both programs are accepted starting Oct. 1. The deadline is Nov. 30 for the bachelor's and RN programs and Feb. 1 for the master's program.

University of San Diego: Hahn School of Nursing and Health Science

    • This school has several nursing programs, including a Master's Entry Program, Master of Science, Doctor of Philosophy and Doctor of Nursing Practice. The Master's Entry Program in Nursing is designed for people seeking a new career in nursing. • San Diego City College offers three nursing programs, including two associate degree programs for those wanting to be a NP or a program for Licensed Vocational Nurses, or LVNs, which is a 30 unit program required if you want to become an RN in California. All three programs teach students about the health care industry through theory classes and lab experience in hospitals and health care offices throughout San Diego County. All are considered to be entry level programs for students who want to become either a NP or RN in a hospital, home health agency, doctor's office, care facility or outpatient clinic. To apply, prospective students must first pass Biology 230, Biology 235 and Biology 205 with a "C" or better at San Diego City College.
