San Diego State Colleges

Earning a college degree substantially increases the amount of money you can expect to earn over a lifetime. Attending college, however, is very expensive. Much of that cost can be reduced by attending a public university instead of a private school. Those considering attending college in the San Diego area have five public schools from which to choose.
  1. San Diego City College

    • Established as the first community college in San Diego in 1914, San Diego City College offers associate degrees and credits that can be transferred to four-year schools. Among the schools that accept transfer credits from San Diego City College are schools in the University of California system, many private colleges and universities, and schools in the California State University system.

    San Diego Mesa College

    • The largest community college in San Diego, San Diego Mesa College offers classes in science, computers, humanities and business. Its classes also transfer to most California colleges and universities. The accelerated learning program allows students at 15 high schools to take classes at the university through its faculty.

    San Diego Miramar College

    • Miramar College is located in suburban San Diego in the Mira Mesa area. The 120-acre campus is just off Interstate 15. Classes are transferable to most California colleges and universities. The college has also provided training for most firefighters and law enforcement officers in the state since 1969.

    University of California, San Diego

    • With an enrollment of more than 25,000, the University of California, San Diego has 10 divisions and schools. They are arts and humanities, biological sciences, International Relations/Pacific Studies, Jacobs School of Engineering, Physic Sciences, Rady School of Management, School of Medicine, Scripps Institute of Oceanography, Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences and Social Sciences. Also on campus are the Center for U.S.-Mexican Relations, University of California, San Diego Medical Center, San Diego Supercomputer Center and the Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation

    San Diego State University

    • Founded in 1897, San Diego State University has an enrollment of about 35,000. The university's most popular majors are art, business administration, communication, criminal justice, international business, kinesiology, liberal studies, nursing, political science and psychology. Students can take classes on-line through Blackboard. The university offers 84 undergraduate majors, 76 master's degree programs and 16 doctoral degrees through seven colleges. There are six men's sports programs including football and basketball, along with 12 women's programs.
