Ohio University, the first regional campus of Ohio University, has been offering a college education to Chillicothe and its surrounding areas since 1946. Ohio University touts itself as offering the close-knit feel of a small community combined with the resources of a large national university. The Chillicothe campus has more than 2,000 enrolled students and offers more than 20 academic programs. This extension of the Ohio State University system offers practical educational curriculum, combining the needs of the local community with research and technical advice. The Ohio State University Extension offers programs in the areas of family and consumer sciences, youth development, community development and agricultural and natural resources. The Extension touts its "practical advice, sensible solutions, and realistic down-to-earth answers." For instance, a food and nutrition education program offering serves up free classes on cooking nutritious food.

Daymar College has been offering career training since 1963 and has a Chillicothe presence, as well as other Ohio locations. Daymar advertises itself as one of the more specialized technical colleges in Ohio. It focuses on training people quickly with an outcome of landing jobs. The programs offered by the college center on practical skills in the areas of billing and coding, business management, criminal justice, human resources management, medical massage therapy and medical assisting. The college offers campuses in Kentucky and Indiana, as well. Courses are also available online.
