Youngstown, Ohio Area Colleges

The city of Youngstown was officially incorporated in 1867. In 1876, the Mahoning County seat was relocated from Canfield to Youngstown. The Youngstown Historical Center of Industry and Labor has an exhibit that shows the history of the iron and steel industries that helped shape the city. The Butler Institute of American Art is located near Youngstown State University. Other colleges and universities are located near Youngstown that offer a variety of educational opportunities to interested students.
  1. Youngstown State University

    • This Youngstown college has about 15,000 students. YSU has more than 100 undergraduate programs, in addition to 35 master's and doctorate programs. Student to faculty ratio is 19:1. The Martin Luther King Scholarship is available for qualified students at various area schools. Five university residence halls are located on the campus that house more than 1,000 students. University Courtyard Apartments and the Flats at Wick offer apartment-style living exclusively for students that is only a block away from campus. The university also contains the $12 million Andrews Student Recreation and Wellness Center.

    Mercy College

    • This is a Catholic college in Youngstown that focuses on the education of healthcare workers and health science professionals. The Health Care Administration program offers coursework and internships to prepare students for administrative roles in the healthcare industry. The college has approval by the Ohio Board of Regents to grant bachelor's degrees in nursing and associate degrees in nursing, health information technology and general studies. There is no on-campus housing available at this school.

    Penn State Shenango

    • This university is about a half-hour drive from Youngstown and is located in Sharon, Pennsylvania. It's an urban campus with no on-campus housing, and has an enrollment of 700 to 750 students. The average class size is 25 with a student to faculty ratio of 15:1. Bachelor's degrees offered include business, nursing and administration of justice. Associate degree programs include hotel and restaurant management, information sciences and technology, physical therapist assistant and business administration

    Butler College at LindenPointe

    • This is another college about a half-hour drive from Youngstown, located in Hermitage, Pennsylvania. It is also known as BC3 at LindenPointe. This school is a community college that offers associate degrees that can be used to enter the job market after graduation, or used as a springboard for transfer to a four-year university. Associate degree programs include criminology, elementary education, business administration, business management, social work and psychology.
