East Central College is a public, two-year school with its primary campus in Union, Missouri. The college offers a satellite learning campus, the Southwest Area Center, in Sullivan, Missouri, approximately 61 miles from Farmington. The campus opened in 1977 and moved to its present location in 1990. The college offers day and evening courses at the branch in a variety of subjects to prepare students to transfer to the main campus or a traditional, four-year institution. The college also offers online courses. On-campus facilities include a computer lab and centers for mathematics and English tutoring. Financial aid opportunities for students at East Central College include federal and state loans and grants, veterans benefits and institutional scholarships. Academic counseling and job placement assistance are offered at the Southwest Area Center. No extracurricular activities are available on campus.

Founded in 1873, Southeast Missouri State University is a public, four-year college in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, approximately 79 miles from Farmington. Home to more than 10,800 undergraduate and graduate students, the university was No. 76 among all Midwestern universities that offered master's degrees in 2011 from "U.S. News and World Report." The largest program offered at the school in terms of enrollment is its elementary education undergraduate major, according to the "2009 Barron's Profiles of American Colleges." Among the school's 200 degree programs are nursing, hospitality management, computer science, journalism and physical and social sciences. The college offers internships in most majors and study abroad placements in 40 countries. Approximately 82 percent of freshmen and 76 percent of continuing students receive some form of financial aid, explains "Barron's." The college sponsors 15 intercollegiate and 45 intramural sports teams. Eighteen Greek fraternities and sororities have chapters on campus, and the school has more than 90 student clubs and organizations.
