Central Missouri Colleges

The central region of Missouri provides its high school students with a variety of choices for higher learning opportunities. The colleges in Central Missouri range from large state universities -- University of Missouri -- and small, private schools -- Westminster College and Stephens College. Scholarships are available for Missouri students through organizations and programs based in the Show Me State, including Missouri State Library Scholarships and Charles Gallagher Student Financial Assistance.
  1. Lincoln University

    • Lincoln University (lincolnu.edu) is in Missouri's state capital, Jefferson City. This university is a historically African-American school and was founded in 1866. Undergraduate studies include fine arts, business and economics, agriculture and journalism. Lincoln University's graduate degrees include a Master of Arts, Master of Business Administration and Master of Science. The school's mascot is the Blue Tigers.

    Westminster College of Missouri

    • The Westminster College of Missouri (westminster-mo.edu) is in downtown Fulton, right off Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard. This private four-year institute was founded as Fulton College in 1849, but changed its name in 1851. Westminster's campus features the National Churchill Museum (churchillmemorial.org), which is on the National Register of Historic Places. The museum includes the Church of St. Mary the Virgin, Aldermanbury; this church was built in England during the 17th century, but was relocated to Westminster College in 1965.

    Stephens College

    • Located in Columbia, Stephens College (stephens.edu) is one of the oldest women's colleges in the United States, founded in 1833. According to the Princeton Review, the most popular majors at Stephens are drama and dramatics, theater arts and general fashion. One section of Stephens College -- the Stephens College South Campus Historic District -- is on the National Register of Historic Places.

    University of Missouri

    • The main campus of the University of Missouri (missouri.edu) system is in Columbia. Founded in 1839, the University of Missouri was one of the first public universities established west of the Mississippi River. The University of Missouri, also called Mizzou by students, is the largest public research university in Missouri. Notable academic departments at Mizzou is journalism and the Center for Dispute Resolution.

    Central Methodist University

    • Central Methodist University (centralmethodist.edu), or CMU, is in Fayette and affiliated with the United Methodist Church. This Christian-affiliated school provides studies in religion, philosophy, theater arts and child development. CMU also offers a pre-ministry program. This private school was founded in 1854, making it one of the first Christian-affiliated schools in Missouri. CMU has a student to faculty ratio of 15-to-1.

    Missouri Valley College

    • Affiliated with the Presbyterian Church USA, Missouri Valley College (moval.edu) is a private, four-year college in Marshall, within 10 minutes of Indian Foothills Park. At the time of publication, approximately 1,800 students attend Missouri Valley College, according to the National Center for Educational Statistics. Degrees include religion/philosophy, hospitality & tourism management and art with a graphic design concentration. The schools mascot is the Vikings.
