The University of Missouri was founded in 1839 and it has an annual student enrollment of more than 31,000. The second-oldest women's college in the nation, Stephens College was founded in 1833. The private college offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in 50 different areas of study. Students can also prepare for professional degrees in fields like medicine and law with Stephens College's pre-professional curriculum. The school offers students smaller classes with an average ratio as of 2009 of 12 students for every professor. Stephens College fields women's athletic teams that compete in basketball, volleyball, tennis, softball and cross country.
