Dallas Baptist University's College of Art offers a bachelor's degree in art with a concentration in photography. In addition to the 24 course hours of core classes for the art degree, the photography concentration requires an additional 15 hours of photography coursework. The concentration focuses on preparing students for commercial photography work, with courses in visual media and web design as well as photography basics.
Southern Methodist University (SMU) offers a photography minor within its School of the Arts. The minor requires 18 hours of coursework in topics such as black-and-white photography, color photography, digital tools and large-format photography, along a required course in photo basics. According to SMU's School of the Arts website, the minor integrates the technical and aesthetic aspects of photography and is designed to prepare students for further work in fine arts or commercial photography. Students can choose a major within the School of the Arts and upon fulfilling the requirements receive a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with the photography minor.
Located in Denton, about 30 minutes from downtown Dallas, Texas Woman's University (TWU) offers bachelor's and master's programs in photography. TWU's photography programs include a Bachelor of Arts in photography, as well as a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a business minor. Master of Arts and Master of Fine Arts programs are also offered. The curriculum focuses on, but is not limited to, feminist issues in art. Students can develop concentrations in specialties including black-and-white photography, digital processes, book arts and alternative processes.
The Art Institute of Dallas is a for-profit institution offering both associate's and bachelor's degrees in photography. The associate's degree program requires 107 credit hours with courses in digital imaging, marketing, studio photography, photojournalism and more. The Bachelor of Fine Arts degree calls for 180 credit hours and requires a portfolio exhibition. Students can expect to finish either program prepared for entry-level positions in various photography fields such as fine arts, portrait, news, commercial or industrial.
