How to Build Up an Acting Resume in College

Obtaining work as an actor or actress is not necessarily an easy thing to do. Professional acting jobs are highly competitive, and as any movie critic can tell you, those jobs do not always necessarily go to the best actor or actress. Some actors and actresses get cast for a part because of who they are or what work they have done in the past. Aspiring acting professionals in college should make every effort to build up an acting resume while in college to improve their employability later in their careers.

Instructions

Take as many acting classes as possible. Although acting experience is central to building your resume and gaining you additional work as an actor, taking courses in college can help prepare you for later roles that you do happen to land. As you begin to become competent as a professional actor, other professionals in the industry will take notice and may offer you jobs as a result.

Participate in community theaters and other non-paying acting activities. The key in building a strong acting resume is to have as much experience as possible. All professionals had to start their acting careers somewhere, and even the most minor roles indicate that you are serious about your acting career.

Take classes in dance, ballet, music and voice in order to increase your ability to gain parts in musicals and dance productions. Not all acting jobs are just in stage acting, television or movies. Some actors break into the industry by using their skills in other creative endeavors to get a foot in the door. You should even consider modeling as an additional option to increase your exposure and time working in front of the camera.

    • 4

Create a professional resume with a headshot in order to increase your marketability and have something to submit to talent agencies, television and movie studios and theaters that regularly put on productions. Your resume should include your acting education, experience, awards, certifications and anything else related to the field of acting.

Attend as many open casting calls as you can. CV Tips recommends going as far as moving if you intend to work in film and television and live in a place where opportunities are limited. Don't be afraid to try out for any and every open position, regardless of whether or not you think you are right for the part. A casting director may see potential in you and your acting skills that you do not see yourself. Add each acting job to your resume and continue to build it until you finish college.
