Create a header for your resume. The header should contain your full legal name, mailing address, contact telephone numbers and a professional email address (e.g. [email protected]). Provide valid contact information so the employer can reach you in a timely manner.
Provide your educational credentials. State the name of the college you are attending and include your major and minor, the year you enrolled in college, your expected graduation date and your GPA. In addition, you may list any coursework that you completed that is relevant to the type of job you are searching for. You should also provide details about other colleges you attended, if applicable. If you are a freshman student, it is a good idea to include your high school information, since you have not been in college for very long.
Prepare the work history section of your resume and list your positions in chronological order, beginning with your most recent job. In most instances, you should only list work history that is relevant to your job search. However, if your work history is limited, you may include other jobs you have had, so the employer can see that you do have work experience. Your work history should include the employer's, name, location (city and state), your job title, dates of employment and your job duties. Include information about internships, seasonal employment, volunteer work and federal work-study jobs too.
Highlight your work-related skills. You should list the skills that are most relevant to that employer's needs. For instance, if you are applying for a job that requires extensive computer knowledge, you would definitely want to mention any type of computer training and certifications that you earned in that field and the type of software programs you are familiar with. Other examples of work-related skills include clerical skills, administrative skills, management skills, leadership skills, foreign language skills, and written and verbal communication skills.
List your academic accomplishments, awards, and activities. In this section, you may include details about special awards, honors and scholarships you received in college, along with your extracurricular activities such as playing in the band, participating in sports, clubs and organizations, and sorority or fraternity memberships.
Proofread your resume for errors. Carefully review your resume for grammar and spelling mistakes and quickly correct any errors you find. Once you are finished proofreading your resume, save your resume to your computer and to CD for future reference.
