How to Build a Professional Teaching Resume

Your teaching resume creates a first impression: So make it good. Principals and administrators are swamped with applications, so yours has to get their attention to be considered for an interview. George Cook, a retired community college principal, says, "As soon as I saw a mistake in the covering letter or resume when I was reviewing applications from teachers, I circled it with a red pen and put it to one side."

Instructions

    • 1

List the details you need to include in your teaching resume, such as name, contact details, education, experience, references and professional and personal interests.

    • 2

Decide if you are going to write your own resume or hire a professional to do it. If you are applying for your first teaching position, you might want to get it done by an expert to give you a base from which to work and adapt as required.

    • 3

Study teacher resume samples from other teachers and on the Internet. Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the resumes and decide on the style you like best. Pay attention to details, such as the font and the spacing. Templates are available on the Internet.

    • 4

Conduct background research so you can customize your resume. Learn to study the job description and lean your resume in that direction. If, for instance, the position mentions "outdoor education experience" make sure you include the survival workshop you did in the "professional development" category and list "camping and skiing" as personal interests in your resume.

    • 5

Design two resumes: one for teaching jobs and the other for administrative positions. Develop a base resume for administrative positions as a vice-principal that stresses your administrative abilities, rather than your teaching strengths.

    • 6

Ask a school administrator to review your resume. Even if a professional resume writer prepared your resume, there may be gaps that an administrator will spot. Obtain second and third opinions, because resumes are what determine whether you will get the job interview.
