How to Establish Professionalism the First Year of Teaching

Your first year of teaching dictates how your peers and students will view you in the years to come. Like a first impression, you can only change how these people see you -- as professional or immature -- with many years of hard work. Some of the activities to establish professionalism during your first year involve extra time on your part for which you won't be paid. In the long run, however, it will solidify relationships and improve your teaching style in a way that will help you enjoy your job more each year.

Instructions

    • 1

Plan and practice each lesson. Students recognize the difference between a well-prepared and an unprepared teacher.

    • 2

Ask a respected teacher at your school or in your department to mentor you. Write three to five professional goals and share these with your mentor. Revise them according to your mentor's advice.

    • 3

Join a professional teacher network in your area. A colleague or administrator at your school should be able to tell you about applicable associations.

    • 4

Teach students to work together and trust each other. Plan activities that encourage this interaction to create a professional learning environment.

    • 5

Partner with one or more colleagues in your field to practice academic research if applicable. Do not attempt a project by yourself during your first year. Partnering will give you experience and build your professional network.

    • 6

Keep learning. Sign up for a seminar or workshop even if the school won't pay for it. Professionals continually improve in their area of study.
