Instruct the student to sit at the table, with a straight back and feet firmly planted on the floor. Give the student beads and a string with a knot at the end, along with the spice jar and toothpicks. Set your timer for five minutes and instruct the student to thread the beads onto the string and place the toothpicks through the holes of the spice jar. These activities develop strong fine motor skills, as well as start the practice session with a fun activity.
When the timer signals the end of the first session, hand the student worksheet printouts (see Resources). Instruct the student to pay close attention to letter shapes and spacing. Set the timer for 10 minutes and signal the student to begin.
Check the student's worksheets and identify his problem areas. Look specifically at letter shape, size and spacing.
Set the baking tray on the table. Pour sugar, shaving cream or spaghetti sauce on the tray. Tell the student to practice writing his letters in the contents of the tray. This fun activity develops muscle memory while keeping the student engaged and entertained. Set the timer for five minutes to signal the end of handwriting practice.
Repeat these short handwriting practices daily, focusing on the areas of handwriting where the child is struggling most.
