Prepare a slanted writing surface to practice writing motor skills on. Take a large piece of particle board or a white board and prop it up against a wall to create a 45-degree angle. Place a few books underneath the board to stabilize the writing surface.
Practice writing "o"s and "l"s on a scratch piece of blank paper with the student. These two shapes are the building blocks of all the letters. Practice until the student feels comfortable creating even, clean spheres and lines.
Practice writing letters in the air holding a pen or pencil. Practice with the student as you both try to create small, controlled letters in the air. This exercise helps to develop the muscles needed for controlled, clear writing.
Fill out practice sheets with the student. Rather than rewriting the alphabet numerous times, utilize printed practice sheets to keep the handwriting practice interesting and exciting. Use the slanted writing surface to encourage using the correct muscles in the arm.
