Courses within a photography degree can range from image composition to film development. Maryland has several universities with professional photography degree options.   1. Washington School of Photography

    • The Washington School of Photography was established in 1976 and is located in the Baltimore/Washington DC. This school offers students two certificate programs: Certificate in Professional Photography and Advanced Certificate in Professional Photography. The Certificate in Professional Photography is a year-long program that combines lectures with hands-on workshops to teach students the basics in professional photography. The Advanced Certificate in Professional Photography is for students who have surpassed the beginner and intermediate level of photography. This advanced-level program consists of 144 course hours in six categories, which include: Advanced Lighting Techniques, Still Life and Product Photography, Digital Techniques, Advanced People Photography, Business and Marketing as well as Portfolio Production. As of 2010, the total tuition for both the Certificate in Professional Photography and the Advanced Certificate in Professional Photography was $6,880.00. Applicants must have a high school diploma, or GED, and be at least 18 years old at time of registration.

    Loyola University Maryland

    • The Loyola University Maryland is located in Baltimore. This university offers a four-year Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in photography designed to provide students with the latest in photography techniques. This degree program consists of 30 core courses, which include: basic digital photography, digital imaging, history of photography, photojournalism, advanced photography, professional photographic practices and intermediate photography, just to list a few. Courses are taught through theory lectures and practical hands-on laboratory sessions. As of 2010, the total annual tuition for resident and non-resident students is $52,590 if living on-campus or $48,580 if living off-campus. Financial aid and scholarships are available to all students.

    The Community College of Baltimore County

    • The Community College of Baltimore County offers a two-year Associate of Arts (A.A.) Degree in Photography. This humanities and science degree provides students with a foundational knowledge of photography skill and techniques. To graduate, students must complete a total of 36 to 38 credit hours of general education classes as well as 24 credits in photography. The photography concentration consists of eight core courses, which include: Fundamentals of Photography, Digital Photography I & II, Digital Imaging I, Two-Dimensional Design, Drawing I, Color Theory and Three-Dimensional Design. As of 2010, the tuition for Baltimore County students is $100.00 per credit hour while the tuition for non-Baltimore County students is $191.00 per credit hour. Out-of-state students must pay $286.00 per credit hour. To apply, students must submit official high-school transcripts as well as college transcripts (if transferring).
