Colleges for Journalism in Maryland

Maryland is home to 24 private four-year colleges, four private two-year colleges and 120 private career schools. It also has more than 15 public four-year colleges and 25 public community colleges. Many of these colleges offer concentrations in journalism--some as majors, others as minors. Some colleges require that students major in English or communications to minor in journalism.
  1. Colleges in Western Maryland

    • Western Maryland colleges with concentrations in journalism include Mount St. Mary's University and Frostburg State University. At Mount St. Mary's, students majoring in communications can minor in journalism, as well as mass communication. Mount St. Mary's is near Emmitsburg Community Park. Frostburg State University offers a minor in journalism, which requires classes in history, English, mass communication and political science. Frostburg State University is minutes from Frostburg Recreation Complex. It is also a short drive from Frostburg Plaza Shopping Center.

    Eastern Maryland

    • Howard Community College, located in Columbia, offers an associate degree in journalism. This degree requires classes in English, mass media and writing for television and radio, as well as the core requirements for the college.

      McDaniel College, in Westminster, offers bachelor's degrees in English with a minor in journalism. This minor requires 24 course hours, in addition to the 48 required hours for an English degree. McDaniel College is minutes from the Cranberry Mall Shopping Center, Bair Stadium and the Carroll County Regional Airport.

    Colleges in Baltimore

    • The Coppin State University Department of Humanities, located in Baltimore, offers a minor in journalism for students majoring in English. Other available minors are Philosophy, French and Spanish.

      Morgan State University of Baltimore offers a Bachelor's of Science in Journalism in conjunction with its English department. Majors in journalism may concentrate in print journalism, broadcast journalism or converging media.

      Towson University of Baltimore offers concentrations in journalism and new media to students who major in mass communications. Electives for this major include photojournalism and magazine publishing. Also available is a certificate in Broadcast Journalism.

    Colleges Near Washington, D.C.

    • The University of Maryland Philip Merrill College of Journalism, of College Park, grants a Bachelor's in Journalism to successful students. This school also offers a Master's of Journalism and a Doctor of Journalism degree. Master's degree students can also complete a thesis project to receive a Master of Arts degree.

      Hood College of Frederick offers a journalism minor, which requires courses in news writing and communications law, among others.
