The University of Illinois is a public university housing 16 schools and colleges and is approximately 150 miles from Chicago. The College of Media's Department of Journalism offers a broadcast journalism degree program that has accreditation from the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications. The journalism faculty has earned professional and academic awards and three Pulitzer Prizes. Student abilities are challenged in laboratory classes to produce live radio and television broadcasts. The University of Missouri was established in 1908, and its School of Journalism is one of the oldest schools in the country. With more than 285 degree programs and 40 online programs to offer, it is one of largest public research universities in the state of Missouri. The university offers six bachelor's degree programs in journalism with more than 20 areas of specialization. Students learn though hands-on experience gained by working at radio and television stations. The University offers Journalism Scholars and Walter Williams Scholars programs for an elite group of students.
The S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications offers bachelor's degrees in broadcast journalism, radio, television, and film. A Master of Arts degree in broadcast journalism is also available from the school. From their first day of journalism school, students are encouraged to learn how to use audio, camera, and editing equipment; how to write clearly, and how to navigate the digital world. The courses are structured around hands-on experience and practical skills.
