Hunter College allows bachelor degree candidates to major or minor in dance. Courses include folk dance, post modern technique, dance history, hip hop, ballet and west African dance technique. Local New York City dancers and choreographers occasionally guest teach. Student creativity is nurtured at Hunter on an individual level. Howard University, in Washington, D.C., offers a major concentration in dance for bachelor's in theater arts candidates. Modern dance is the primary focus of dance courses at Howard, but ballet, tap and African dance are also offered. Anatomy and kinesiology, ethnology of dance, aesthetic of dance, dance criticism and movement analysis are core courses for students wishing to major in dance. Auditions are held in January, February and March for the upcoming fall semester. Auditions preparation classes cover ballet barre and combinations, modern combination, jazz combination and African technique and phrases. Financial aid is available for students.
The School of Music, Theater and Dance has an entire department devoted to dance. Students can obtain a bachelor's of fine art in dance. The foundation of the dance school is to foster the influences of 20th-century modern dance and ballet. Qualities of leadership, independent thinking, teamwork skills and creativity is nurtured in this dance program. A course in teaching methods is required for all dance students. Mills College, in San Fransisco, is a woman-only undergraduate school and co-educational graduate school. Refinement of each student's technical abilities is a key focus of dance training at Mills.
