Professional Dance Colleges

If you are interested in a professional career in dance, a number of educational opportunities are available. One path is to pursue a bachelor's degree in dance at a university. Several universities have excellent dance programs, facilities and faculty. A university provides the opportunity for a well-rounded and interdisciplinary education. A bachelor's degree typically requires four years. A second option is to concentrate exclusively on dance at a performing arts college. Performing colleges are geared toward preparing students for professional careers in dance.

    • Columbia College has 120 academic programs and 12,000 students. The Dance program was established in 1969 and it offers bachelor's and master's degrees in dance. The program focuses on a wide range of topics, including dance styles, improvisation, composition, dance history and theory. Students have the opportunity for professional auditions and the chance to meet visiting dance artists and performers. Prospective students are encouraged to visit Columbia and observe classes, attend performances and meet faculty and students.

    Duke University

    • The dance program at Duke University was established in the 1930s. It focuses on three primary areas --- ballet, modern dance and African dance --- however other styles are also taught, including jazz, swing and flamenco. The courses range from beginner to those aimed at highly trained dancers. Required course work also includes dance history, choreography, kinesiology, world dance cultures and dance writing. The faculty includes many top performers in the world of dance. Financial aid and fellowships are available for dance students.

    • Performers College is located in Essex, England, near London. Students attending Performers College have many opportunities to audition and perform at theaters and television studios in London. Performers College is a performing arts school that offers a three-year program in professional dance, focusing on ballet, jazz, tap, contemporary and several other styles as well. Students earn a National Diploma for Professional Dance.

    The Northern School of Contemporary Dance

    • The Northern School of Contemporary Dance is located in Leeds, England. It is devoted to dance and the performing arts, and it has an international reputation with up-to-date training facilities and a conservatory atmosphere. The school offers a three-year study program leading to a Bachelor of Performing Arts with Honors in Contemporary Dance degree. A postgraduate degree in contemporary dance is also offered. Course work focuses on both ballet and contemporary dance, technical skills, specialized areas and preparation for a professional career.
