Colleges & Universities Near East Lansing, Michigan

The home of Michigan State University, East Lansing, Michigan is known for its educational opportunities. While the land-grant institution is the largest and best-known university in the area, it is not the only one. There are also several colleges and universities in the next-door Lansing, the state's capital.

    • MSU is located just three miles from Michigan's capital.

      Michigan State University (MSU) is a Big Ten university that was founded in 1855 as a land-grant college. Originally an agricultural school, it became the prototype for land-grant institutions across the country. It went through six name changes before settling on its current name in 1964. It's located in East Lansing on 5,200 acres of land, and it has an additional 15,000 acres throughout Michigan used for research. There are 200 programs of study and more than 47,000 students who attend from all over the world. There are 17 colleges within the university that grant degrees. According to U.S. News and World Report, MSU ranks #1 in elementary and secondary education and graduate programs in nuclear physics, industrial and organizational psychology, and rehabilitation counseling. It's the only university in the country with three on-campus medical schools. It also has the largest single residence hall system in the U.S.

    Cooley Law School

    • Cooley Law School has four campuses around the state of Michigan, in Lansing, Grand Rapids, Auburn Hills and Ann Arbor. It has the largest law school faculty in the country, with 123 full-time and 279 adjunct faculty. It also has the largest minority enrollment and foreign national enrollment in law schools in the country. Cooley offers nine different law degrees. The college was founded in 1972 in Lansing by a group of lawyers and judges, including the Michigan Supreme Court Justice Thomas Brennan. It didn't expand to other cities until 2003.

    Davenport University

    • Davenport University is a business college that has campuses throughout Michigan. The main campus is in Grand Rapids, nearly an hour from East Lansing, but it also has a campus is in Lansing. The school offers courses in business, technology and health. The degrees offered range from diploma programs to master's degrees, including an executive MBA program.

    Lansing Community College

    • Lansing Community College serves the tri-county area of Ingham, Clinton and Eaton counties. Founded in 1957, it was then focused on technical and industrial education. It's now focused on career and workforce development, general education, developmental education and personal enrichment. The college is located in downtown Lansing, mere blocks from the Capitol building. It offers two-year degrees and technical certificates along with continuing education credits in a wide range of subjects.

    Great Lakes Christian College

    • Great Lakes Christian College is a school serving the needs of the Church of Christ. It has a small campus in Delta Township, just west of East Lansing. The campus is on 47 acres in a residential area. Its main goals are to prepare ministers and lay volunteers for service in the church. The student to faculty ratio is 13 to 1. Majors include Bible theology, communications, Christian ministries, cross-cultural ministries, early childhood education, family life education, psychology/counseling, Christian education, music, history, youth ministry, business and elementary education.
