Canadian Catholic Universities & Colleges

While you can study theology at many of Canada's prominent schools, your choices for a Catholic university are much more limited. People choose to study at Catholic colleges, many of which are located on the campuses of much larger universities, in order to live and work with like-minded individuals and to pursue a deeper relationship with their religion.
  1. Ontario

    • The largest selection of Catholic universities reside in the province of Ontario. One of the largest is St. Jerome's University, located on the University of Waterloo campus. Originally a school for Catholic boys, St. Jerome's now offers college level classes for both men and women. Another option is University of St. Michael's College - Toronto. Founded in 1852, University of St. Michael's is the oldest of seven colleges within the University of Toronto and allows students a smaller community of like-minded peers with whom they can socialize and learn.

    Alberta

    • Further west, in the province of Alberta, is St. Mary's University College in Calgary. The college offers bachelor of arts degrees in English, history and psychology and accepts transfer students in sciences and business. St. Mary's also offers the only bachelor of education program in the entire country that is designed for future Catholic schools teachers. Further north in the city of Edmonton is St. Joseph's College. Founded in 1926, St. Joseph's is located on the University of Alberta and offers courses in ethics, religious education, theology and philosophy.

    Saskatchewan

    • Among Saskatchewan province's Catholic colleges is Campion College, federated with the University of Regina. Styled in the Jesuit learning tradition, Campion College boasts a small community where personalized education allows students to be treated as individuals. The college enrolls about one thousand students and is located in one of the largest urban parks in North America.

Located in Bruno, St. Therese Catholic College of Faith and Mission is devoted to training individuals to become disciples of Christ. It offers a nine-month program, broken into three trimesters, for people 17 and older who are interested in developing a life of faith and mission. Graduates of the program are encouraged to seek employment in youth ministries, international missionary work, or other types of ministries.

    Other Provinces

    • Other Catholic universities can be found in Canada's other provinces. In the western province of British Columbia, Corpus Christi College opened in 1999. For those in the far eastern side of Canada, in Nova Scotia, both Saint Mary's University in Halifax and St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish offer higher education for Catholic students. For those who want to proselytize, the The Catholic School of Evangelization in the province of Manitoba is a lay ministry that focuses on learning the gospel.
