Spelman College, an all-female HBCU (historically black college or university) in Atlanta, has a Pre-law and Criminology concentration tied in with its sociology degree. The courses required for this concentration include: Social Control and Deviant Behavior; Introduction to Criminology; Sociology of Law; and Women, Values, and Law. There are also law-related courses available at the school in Political Science, History and Philosophy majors. Lastly, Spelman also has a Pre-Law Society open for interested students to join.
Howard University has a law school and a Preprofessional Law Program. The Preprofessional Law Program has several elements, including a law school forum, law school open houses, and Pre-Law Days on campus. The program provides students with LSAT (Law School Admissions Test) help, instructions for applying to law school, information from LSAC (Law School Admission Council) and LSDAS (Law School Data Assembly Service), and contact with practicing lawyers from several law disciplines. The school also offers a Pre-Law concentration in connection with its Political Science degree. Also, there are several law-related clubs.
FAMU offers an actual Pre-Law minor to students. The minor requires 18 credit hours equivalent to six courses. Some of the courses that can be taken to fulfill the minor are: Introduction to Criminal Justice, American Court System, Mock Trial, American Constitutional Law and Introduction to Jurisprudence. FAMU also has its own law school and campus organizations, such as a Pre-Law organization and a mock trial organization, for those interested in the law.
Morehouse College is the only private, all-male HBCU in the United States. The institution does not offer a pre-law minor, but does have a pre-law program under its Political Science major. The program involves several courses including: National Government, Legal Environment of Business, Critical Thinking and Advanced Composition. The school recommends that students aspiring to become lawyers should major in Political Science or English.
