Law Colleges in Louisiana

There are four colleges in the state of Louisiana with law schools. Two of these programs are nationally ranked, while the other two are still quality programs in their own right. Baton Rouge and New Orleans serve as the two legal education centers within the state and home to all four law schools.
  1. Tulane University

    • Tulane University's School of Law in New Orleans is the state's top-rated law program. "U.S. News & World Report" ranked the Tulane program No. 45 in the nation among all law programs in 2009. Tulane's law program is best known for its variety of degree offerings and its strengths in the areas of environmental law, international and comparative law and maritime law. Degrees offered include the traditional three-year Juris Doctor (J.D.), the LL.M. (Master of Laws) and the S.J.D. (Doctor of Juridical Science). Specialization areas offered through certificate programs are also available in civil, environmental, maritime, European and sports law.

    Louisiana State University

    • Louisiana State University (LSU) in Baton Rouge is the state's second-highest rated law program. The LSU program was rated No. 75 in the nation in 2009. LSU also offers both the J.D. and LL.M. degrees, but it also offers a number of joint-degree programs. LSU is known for its work in the area of international law, and so many of its degree designations include a comparative law certification designation as well (C.L.). Degrees offered in conjunction with the J.D./C.L. are the Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.), Master of Mass Communication (M.M.C.) and the Master of Public Administration (M.P.A.).

    Loyola University New Olreans

    • Although not nationally ranked, Loyola University New Orleans is a third quality option for law students as a third-tier school. Loyola, too, offers the J.D. and the LL.M. degree. Loyola's areas of specialization are in the fields of public interest law and international law. The J.D. degree is also offered as part of three joint-degree programs that include additional degrees in the areas of public administration (M.P.A.), business administration (M.B.A.) and urban and regional planning (M.U.R.P.).

    Southern University

    • Southern University in Baton Rouge is the state's fourth law school. "U.S. News & World Report" ranked the Southern law program as a fourth-tier institution in 2009. Southern offers the traditional J.D. program as either a full-time day program or a part-time day or evening program. A joint-degree in public administration (M.P.A.) is also possible through the program. Southern further offers a certificate in public law.
