University of Louisiana, Lafayette, was established in 1900. Originally known as Southwestern Louisiana Industrial Institute, the university underwent various incarnations before receiving its current title in 1999. The university serves more than 17,000 students and offers undergraduate and graduate-level programs. Students can choose from traditional as well as online and evening courses.
Students also receive free admission to all games, as well as the campus' art museum. The Paul and Lulu Hilliard University Art Museum highlights the works of various artists, as well as a number of programs and a yearly festival. Students can partake in the museum's various membership options as well. UL Lafayette is also part of the larger University of Louisiana organization, which includes seven other universities throughout the state.

Southern Louisiana Community College (SLCC) provides two-year higher educational opportunities for those seeking a college-level education. Potential students must hold a high school diploma or its equivalent and submit SAT scores. SLCC offers students an opportunity to participate in the Student Government Association, or the Beta Xi Omega chapter of Phi Theta Kappa--an honor society for those attending two-year institutions. SLCC students can also partake of transfer and career assistance, in addition to general academic support. The SLCC system also has campuses at Franklin and New Iberia.

Louisiana Technical College, founded in 1973, received its current title in July 1995, after various name modifications. Originally a center for those seeking specialized diplomas and certificates, the college began granting associate degrees in 2005. Students pursue course work via traditional and online methods. There is also a Continuing Education Division offering later afternoon, evening and weekend instruction. Professionals and those interested in furthering or changing their current career path may find these types of course schedules to be of great assistance. Remington College, at its Lafayette campus, offers career-focused programs for students seeking either an associate degree or technical diploma. Two-year degree options include criminal justice and computer and network administration. Diploma options include, but are not limited to, medical assisting, cosmetology and electronic technology. The college offers courses at varying times of the day to allow its students flexibility.
