When a college student experiences a life-changing event during an academic semester, such as the death of a family member, the student may withdraw from the semester. In this case, the student will not receive grades in her classes and a W will be indicated on the transcript.
A W may affect a student's financial aid status. For example, if financial aid has been disbursed for the semester and the student withdraws from a class, he may be responsible for paying back the costs for the class. Withdrawal slows academic progression and may delay the expected graduation date. Withdrawal may also require payment of a fee.
Withdrawing from a class allows a student to avoid a failed grade. A W on a transcript is regarded as neutral and is more positive than having failing grades. If transferring to another institution, a student may be asked to explain the circumstances of a withdrawal.
