According to Dictionary.com, the primary definition of procrastinate is "to defer action; delay." This definition is applied when procrastinate is used without an object. When used with an object the correct definition is "to put off till another day or time; defer; delay."
In basic terms, to procrastinate means to wait to do something until the last possible minute. Usually people procrastinate because a task is difficult or because they would simply rather spend their time doing something else. For example, rather than doing their homework immediately when they get home, many students procrastinate and do not start their assignments until it is almost bedtime.
Several words and terms have similar meanings to procrastinate. They include dawdle, drag one's feet, stall and postpone. These synonyms are not 100 percent interchangeable with procrastinate; however, they can be used as substitutes in particular situations.
