What Does it Mean to Be a Rhodes Scholar?

Rhodes Scholars are recipients of one of the oldest international scholarships, granted by the University of Oxford in England to students from around the world. The scholarship covers postgraduate study at the university for up to three years.
  1. History

    • The Rhodes Scholarships were established in the will of Cecil Rhodes, a political visionary who left the majority of his wealth to Oxford University. After his death in 1902, the Rhodes Trust was established and it became responsible for administering funds to Rhodes Scholars.

    Requirements

    • Rhodes scholarship applicants must meet four criteria to be considered for the award. They are evaluated on their academic achievements, success and aptitude for sports, selflessness and moral character, and their desire and ability to lead others.

    Benefits

    • All university and college fees at Oxford University are covered by the Rhodes Scholarship. Additionally, recipients are awarded a monthly stipend for living.
