McGill University’s Faculty of Law located in the international metropolis of Montreal enrolls approximately 170 students of law each year. Graduates of the school obtain two degrees, a Bachelor of Civil Law (B.C.L.) and Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) upon completing courses taken during three to four years of academic study. Graduates of McGill’s Faculty of Law can then legally practice law in Canada, the United States, and Britain under the common law system, as well as remain within the Quebec civil law system. In addition, McGill offers Doctor of Civil Law (D.C.L.) and Master of Laws (LL.M.) graduate degrees. McGill’s Faculty of Law is the oldest faculty of law in Canada, established in 1848 in response to a petition published by a group of 23 young men who had been studying for the bar independently.
