Applying for law school is a long and grueling process, the tuition fees are hefty and, once accepted, the hard work really starts. So if you want to go to law school it's important to know your options and make sure you find you the right one for you. A 2010 Rankings list by "top-law-schools.com" found that the best law schools were Yale, Harvard, Stanford and Columbia - in that order.
  1. Yale Law School

    • Located in New Haven, Connecticut, Yale Law School receives more than 3,300 applications every year, but only 6 to 7 percent are successful. Tuition costs average $46,200 per year as of 2011. Between 40 percent and 50 percent of students are placed in judicial clerkships each year. More than 200 named brand firms take on Yale graduates each fall. Yet 10 percent to 15 percent of graduates decide to stay in the field academics, some becoming legal professors. Yale Law School has over 70 full-time faculty members.

    Harvard

    • Harvard is the oldest continuously operating law school in America as it was founded in 1817. It is located in Cambridge, Massachusetts and is made up of 19 buildings. A total 105 full-time professors teach around 1,900 students every year. Harvard Law School has produced 149 of the current federal judges and seven current Supreme Court justices. Harvard has an acceptance rate of 9 percent. Tution costs $48,868 per year as of 2011.

    Stanford Law School

    • This university was founded by Leland Stanford in 1891 and a legal curriculum was added in 1893. However, it took another 15 years before the Law School was established in 1908. One of the original two law professors was former U.S president Benjamin Harrison. It costs $44,880 per year to study at this private school., as of 2011. Around 97 percent of graduates find jobs within nine months. Approximately 4,000 applicants from more than 65 countries and all 50 states apply each year.

    Columbia University School of Law

    • Tuition fees are $41,316 and it will cost an extra $10,228 for room and board, as of 2011 but the 8,500 applicants are not deterred. With around 1,200 applications accepted, the total undergraduate student body is 5,667, 48 percent of which are female. Around 95 percent of Columbia Law Students pass the bar on the first try. The school was founded in 1858.

    Other Top Law Schools

    • New York University Law School fills 450 seats each year from 7,000 applicants. The University of California at Berkeley Boalt Hall School of Law accepts 11 percent of applicants. Located in Philadelphia, the University of Pennsylvania Law School has a 94.4 percent bar exam pass rate. The University of Chicago Law School has an 18 percent acceptance rate and annual tuition is $43,044 as of 2011.
