Colleges for Black Women

There are a number of black colleges and a number of women's colleges in the United States. But there are only a few colleges that fall into both categories. Only two colleges are historically black, for women and still open -- Spelman College in Atlanta, Ga., and Bennett College in Greensboro, N.C.
  1. Spelman College

    • Spelman College began as Atlanta Baptist Female Seminary in 1881 and was founded by Sophia B. Packard and Harriet E. Giles. This private, historically black liberal arts school is for women only and located in Atlanta, Ga. Spelman offers 31 Bachelor's Degrees in Arts and Sciences on its 39-acre, 25-building campus. The school offers students access to financial aid and admits women of all race, color, nationality or physical challenge. As of 2011, the student instructor ratio at Spelman was 12:1.

    Bennett College for Women

    • Bennett College for Women is located on 55 acres in Greensboro, N.C. The school is located on the original land that was purchased for the college by emancipated slaves in 1873. In 1926, Bennett became a women-only college through the Women's Home Missionary Society. As of 2011, the student-to-teacher ratio at Bennett was 11:1. The school offers 23 majors to students including three dual degree programs and one collaborative program. Future and current students of Bennett are eligible to apply for financial aid and use that aid toward their tuition.

    Alabama State University

    • Alabama State University is not a women's only university but is a historically black college. The school is located in Montgomery, Ala., a town rich in southern black history. Alabama State began as the Lincoln Normal School and was located in Marion, Ala. The school was founded in 1867 and was created for black students. The current campus sits on 135 acres and offers nearly 50 undergraduate and graduate programs. As of 2011, the student-to-teacher ratio at Alabama State was 20:1.

    Agnes Scott College

    • Agnes Scott College is a not a black college but is a women-only college. The school, which is located in Decatur, Ga., was founded in 1889. The school is a liberal arts college associated with the Presbyterian Church. The student-to-teacher ratio at Agnes Scott is 9:1, as of 2011. The school offers 33 undergraduate majors, 31 minors, three dual degree programs, and pre-law and pre-medicine programs. The school's campus sits on 100 acres and consists of 29 buildings with one apartment complex.
