The CHE lists 13 campuses as public senior institutions in South Carolina. The University of South Carolina is an obvious starting point, maintaining four campuses, located in Columbia, Aiken, Beaufort and Spartanburg. Other notable schools in this category are the historic College of Charleston, founded in 1770; Clemson, with its annual enrollment of 19,000; the Medical University of South Carolina; and the famed military academy The Citadel. Undergraduate and graduate degrees are available from these and other institutions across the state in a variety of disciplines.
The CHE lists 24 campuses in South Carolina as independent senior institutions. Many are affiliated with religious denominations or church groups, like Southern Methodist, Southern Wesleyan, Presbyterian College or Bob Jones University. Wofford and Winthrop are compact liberal arts colleges with a long history, while Voorhees College and Morris College are historically black schools with a liberal arts focus. The American College of Building Arts (ACBA) offers a Bachelor of Applied Science degree centered entirely around the building arts. The ACBA describes itself as the only school of its kind anywhere in the world.
There are only two schools listed as private for-profit colleges in South Carolina, of which one is purely vocational in nature. The second is the Charleston School of Law (CSL), administered by the nonprofit Charleston School of Law Foundation. CSL is purely a graduate institution, requiring that all applicants have an undergraduate degree. No prior legal training or experience is required. Graduates will receive a Juris Doctor degree.
Most of the out-of-state institutions licensed by South Carolina are vocational and technical schools, or offer only an online presence in the state. However, there are some exceptions. The continuing education department of Florida-based Saint Leo University maintains a physical presence at Shaw Air Force Base and at the naval base in Charleston. The Shaw location offers Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees as well as various diplomas and certifications. Massachusetts-based Lesley College offers graduate programs in education at seven satellite learning centers in South Carolina. Georgia-based South University offers associate, bachelor's and graduate degrees through its Columbia campus.
