Clemson University in Clemson is a public institution that is listed as a research center, and it gives students the opportunity to pursue various academic challenges and degree programs. South Carolina State University in Orangeburg opened its doors in 1896 as the state's only public college for black youth, according to its website. The university has the only undergraduate environmental science field station in America and also offers an undergraduate degree in nuclear engineering and a master's degree in transportation.
Coastal Carolina University in Conway, near Myrtle Beach, is a public liberal arts school with 53 baccalaureate degree possibilities and seven master's degree programs. The school has more than 8,500 students. Programs in marine and wetland studies have the advantage of on-sight training because of the school's coastal location. Other specific programs such as health and aging and social justice are offered as well.
Lander University in Greenwood was originally established as a women's college in 1872 when in was known as Williamston Female College and was located in Williamston. In 1973 it joined the state's system of higher education, and it is now an equal opportunity university with programs in liberal arts and science. Students may earn degrees in nursing, education, business and other professional programs.
