Anatomy and Physiology is a two-semester course that covers all aspects of human structure and function. The first semester concentrates on the structure of cells, tissues, and the skeletal system. It also includes information on the nervous system and the various chemicals involved in homeostasis or balance. The second semester concentrates on body systems such as the endocrine, cardiac, respiratory and reproductive systems. The second portion extensively covers acid-base balance and metabolic processes.
General Psychology and Developmental Psychology are both required courses for admission into a nursing program. General Psychology is an introductory course which covers the foundational theories and principals that make up modern psychology practice. The course content includes history, critical thinking techniques, statistics and human development. Developmental Psychology covers physical and emotional development in humans from infancy through adulthood. Topics cover the effects of genetic predisposition, environmental and cultural influences on the development of the human psyche. Theses courses are important for the prospective nursing student to develop the skills needed to relate to patients.
General Microbiology and the associated lab is an overview of the structure and function of microbes. The course content covers pathogens, and microbial structure and function. The lab includes the cultivation and isolation of microbes and sterile procedures. A better understanding of pathogenic processes enables the prospective nursing student to become aware of the pathophysiology of illness and injury.
This course is a general overview of health and nutrition. Students will learn how to compose a healthy and balanced meal. Topics include digestion, absorption, nutrients and diet supplements. This course is a prerequisite for nursing because it covers basic aspects of nutrition that are crucial in understanding how the body systems operate to keep the body fit and healthy.
