List of Colleges & Universities in South Dakota

According to figures from the 2000 Census, approximately 17 percent of South Dakota residents have a bachelor's degree. This is less than the national average of 20 percent, but this difference can't be attributed to a lack of higher education institutions. As of 2010, there were more than a dozen colleges and universities in the state, not including technical institutes and seminary schools.
  1. Private Liberal Arts Colleges

    • South Dakota is home to three private liberal arts colleges. Two are in Sioux Falls, the state's largest city: Augustana College of South Dakota and the University of Sioux Falls. Mount Marty College in Yankton is the other private liberal arts college in the state. Because these schools are privately owned and operated, they do not offer tuition discounts for South Dakota residents.

    Private Colleges and Universities

    • Students who prefer large private institutions have three choices in South Dakota. They are Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell; National American University in Rapid City; and Presentation College in Aberdeen. Because these institutions are private, tuition is the same for all students regardless of their state of residency.

    Public Colleges and Universities

    • There are six public colleges and universities in South Dakota. These institutions are scattered around the state. Black Hills State University is in Spearfish. Dakota State University students call Madison home. Northern State University is in Aberdeen. The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology is in Rapid City. South Dakota State University is in Brookings and the University of South Dakota is in Vermillion. Because these schools are run by the state, they feature separate in-state and out-of-state tuition rates.

    Native American Tribal Institutions

    • Native American tribes manage two schools of higher education in South Dakota. They are Oglala Lakota College and Sinte Glesk University. In terms of student population, Oglala Lakota in Kyle is the larger of the two. The smaller Sinte Glesk University is in Mission.
