Columbia Basin College, in Pasco, Washington, offers a one-year LPN certificate course. Prerequisites include high school chemistry and biology, as well as college-level physiology microbiology, human anatomy and physiology, English composition, math, communication and public speaking. The coursework required for certification includes nursing and nursing labs, practical nursing, nursing trends, anatomy, physiology and pharmacology for a total of 71 credits. The college offers shortened courses for students with prior nursing certificates as nurse assistants, nurse aids or EMTs.
Concorde Career College, with campuses in Colorado, Missouri, Florida and Oregon, offers a 13-month practical nursing program if taken full time, or 20 months if classes are only taken on the weekends. Coursework includes anatomy and physiology, administration of medications, legal and ethical responsibilities, nutrition, common disease processes, preventative nursing care, rehabilitative nursing care, cultural differences in caring for patients, psychosocial impact of disease and leadership principles. Students must pass the entrance exam before entering the program.
Beckfield College, a member of the National League for Nursing, provides a full-time, 15-month LPN diploma program in its Cincinnati, Ohio and Florence, Kentucky campuses. The classes are comprised of classroom, laboratory and clinical sessions. Lectures are backed up with hands-on laboratory and clinical experiences. Subjects include anatomy and physiology, as well as the challenges presented throughout the life-span of clients, with a focus on long-term care.
Pioneer Pacific College in Oregon offers a five-term or 50-week Practical Nursing Diploma at its Wilsonville and Eugene campuses. Classes include physical assessment, injections, medication, medical and surgical disorders, wound care, urinary and nasogastic catherization and preparation for the NCLEX-PN. Students learn in local clinics and health care facilities under supervision, and the laboratory simulates the equipment and records found in ambulatory care centers. Graduates can opt to obtain additional national certification in gerontology and IV therapy.
